![]() ![]() Norman Myers, a British ecologist, published a seminal paper identifying 10 tropical forest "hotspots" in 1988. ![]() There are currently 36 hotspots around the world and cover only 2.5 percent of the Earth's land surface, but they are home to more than half of the world's plant species as endemics (species found nowhere else) and nearly 43 percent of bird, mammal, reptile, and amphibian species as endemics. The diversity of species and ecosystems varies with altitude above sea level and ocean depth. The majority of hotspots are found in tropical and subtropical areas where temperatures and humidity remain high all year.Coral reefs, snails, lobsters, and fish are all considered in the case of marine hotspots.Biodiversity hotspots are areas with a high proportion of endemic species. ![]()
